The Legacy of Hope Foundation Celebrates International Women’s Day

(Ottawa, ON) March 8, 2021 – The Legacy of Hope Foundations (LHF) is marking International Women’s Day by honouring Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) women around the world as life-givers, nurturers and providers and for their continuing contributions to improving the lives of Indigenous Peoples since time immemorial.

“International Women’s Day is a time to raise awareness of the many issues affecting Indigenous women and girls, and our commitment to working for a more equitable society,” said Teresa Edwards, Executive Director and In-House Legal Counsel. “In our Nations’ cultures, women have occupied and continue to occupy central roles – from Youth Activists, Leaders, Mothers and Matriarchs, Knowledge-Keepers and Elders; women are the heart and soul of the family, the community and the Nation. Today and every day, we encourage everyone to act now, address injustice and contribute to equity.”

Today men can be the role model for young boys in promoting the honouring and respecting of women and girls and by continuing to shed light on the inequities and the injustices that Indigenous women continue to experience. International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 as a day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

The LHF is a charitable organization that has been working to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada for more than 20 years. The LHF’s goal is to educate and raise awareness about the history and existing impacts of the Residential and Day School Systems, Sixties Scoop, and other colonial acts of oppression against Indigenous Survivors, their descendants and their communities. LHF works to address racism by encouraging people to address discrimination and injustice in order to promote hope and healing and to contribute to the equity, dignity, and respectful treatment of Indigenous Peoples and to foster Reconciliation in Canada.
