(Ottawa, ON) \u2013 January 31, 2024<\/b> - In this special <\/span>Roots and Hoots <\/span><\/i>collaboration episode with Knockabout Media, host Gordon Spence is pleased to be joined by Eric Burant and Garrison Garrow of the Indigenous Art Centre (IAC). Eric Burant is an Archivist of mixed Anishinaabe and settler ancestry and Garrison Garrow is the Manager of Programs and Collections and is a <\/span>Kanien’keh\u00e1:ka artist<\/span> from Akwesasne. The two speak with Gordon about the history of the Indigenous Art Centre, their shared passion for Indigenous art and the intention of their work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its inception in 1965, the IAC holds one of the largest collections of contemporary Indigenous art. The vast collection includes sculptures, carvings, mittens, moccasins and paintings that are hand crafted and created by Indigenous artists across Canada. Eric and Garrison speak with Gordon about the necessity of showcasing, preserving and protecting Indigenous art.\u00a0 Pieces in the collection travel all over the world. The LHF is a national, Indigenous-led, charitable organization that has been working to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada for over 23 years. The LHF\u2019s goal is to educate and raise awareness about the history and existing intergenerational impacts of the Residential and Day School Systems and subsequent Child Welfare System on Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis) Survivors, their descendants, and their communities to promote hope and healing in Canada. The LHF works to encourage Canadians to address discrimination and injustice in order to contribute to the equity, dignity, and respectful treatment of Indigenous Peoples and to foster Reconciliation.<\/p>\n

The LHF has close to 30 educational exhibitions that promote awareness of Indigenous history that are free to borrow and is working on making exhibitions available online. LHF also has curriculum for K-12 and for adults, along with Activity Guides, Workshops and Training, 2 Podcast series, all aimed at educating Canadians about Indigenous history and the shared history of Residential and Day Schools, the Child Welfare System, and other colonial acts of oppression. The LHF works to develop empathy and understanding so as to eliminate ongoing racism against Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n
