The Legacy of Hope Foundation Presents \u2013 Roots & Hoots Episode 43: Featuring Morgan Hare<\/h2><\/h1><\/div>

(Ottawa, ON) \u2013 June 14, 2023\u2013 In this week\u2019s episode of Roots and Hoots, our host Gordon Spence is delighted to welcome Morgan Hare. Hailing from the M\u2019Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Mr. Hare has been instrumental in urban Indigenous program development for over three decades. He currently runs Hare Consulting Group Inc., having previously worked with the Odawa Native Friendship Centre and the Tungasuvvingat Inuit Community Centre. Mr. Hare graciously shares some of the notable takeaways and triumphs from his distinguished career.<\/p>\n

Mr. Hare recounts his early life on Manitoulin Island, brought up in a family fluent in the Ojibwe language. His upbringing took a dramatic turn upon entering school. After college, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, undertaking assignments in South America and the U.S.A., before serving in Winnipeg. Ultimately, Mr. Hare transitioned to a role as a Parole Officer. While fulfilling, the associated stress and risk of burnout eventually compelled him to explore other avenues.<\/p>\n

Endowed with a capacity to manage significant projects and discern what needs to be done from a bird\u2019s eye view, Mr. Hare has made substantial contributions during his tenure in Ottawa. He helped establish partnerships and projects bridging urban and Northern communities, played a role in creating an addictions centre and an Inuit medical centre, and raised substantial funds for renovating an early years centre with the Odawa Native Friendship Centre.<\/p>\n

In his current role as President of Hare Consulting Group Inc., Mr. Hare has been collaborating with one of the United Churches in Ottawa on a Reconciliation community project. For him, engaging with the Churches provides an opportunity to build relationships and enlighten them about Indigenous perspectives and their integral role in Reconciliation.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on Reconciliation, Mr. Hare acknowledges the exceptional efforts communities have made to hold various Churches and the Federal Government accountable for past wrongs. He turns to the TRC\u2019s 94 Calls to Action for guidance and is committed to acting on these to the best of his ability. Optimistic about the future, Mr. Hare encourages us to think big, including envisaging greater Indigenous control of major institutions<\/p>\n

The LHF is a national, Indigenous-led, charitable organization that has been working to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada for over 23 years. The LHF\u2019s goal is to educate Canadians about the history and existing intergenerational impacts of the Residential and Day School Systems and subsequent Child Welfare System on Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis) Survivors, their descendants, and their communities to promote hope and healing in Canada. The LHF works to encourage Canadians to address discrimination and injustice in order to contribute to the equity, dignity, and respectful treatment of Indigenous Peoples and to foster Reconciliation.<\/p>\n

The LHF has close to 30 educational exhibitions that promote awareness of Indigenous history that are free to borrow and is working on making exhibitions available online. LHF also has curriculum for K-12 and for adults, along with Activity Guides, Workshops and Training, 2 Podcast series, all aimed at educating Canadians about Indigenous history and the shared history of Residential and Day Schools, the Child Welfare System, and other colonial acts of oppression. The LHF works to develop empathy and understanding so as to eliminate ongoing racism against Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
