(Ottawa, ON) <\/strong>January 23, 2023 \u2013 <\/strong>The Legacy of Hope Foundation (LHF) is grateful for the support and generosity of spirit demonstrated by the Student Activity Council of Earl Haig Secondary School for helping to raise awareness about the injustices against Indigenous Peoples. The LHF will continue to produce education materials and exhibitions that speak to the rich histories, as well as the impacts of abuses on 7 generations of Indigenous Peoples and having young allies helps this goal greatly.<\/p>\n

Earl Haig Secondary School is a public high school in Toronto, Ontario. Since 1930, the school has been teaching its students to seize the day and enjoy every minute. In 1982, the school began hosting the Claude Watson Art Program. Named after the commander of the British Expeditionary Force, Field Marshal The 1st<\/sup> Earl Haig. The Student Activity Council has been fundraising for the Legacy of Hope Foundation for the last 4-5 years.<\/p>\n

The week leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, along with educational announcements, Earl Haig\u2019s Student Advocate, Michelle Li, organized an initiative for students to paint 200 rocks in memory of the 200 and growing number of unmarked graves.<\/p>\n

The workshop was inspired by an art installation done by the University of Guelph. \u201cWe wanted students to reflect on the children torn from their families and sent to Residential Schools,\u201d said Michelle. The rocks continue to be displayed in the main hall at the school.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are only beginning to understand the atrocities and intergenerational trauma inflicted on the Indigenous communities in our country. Earl Haig\u2019s SAC is committed to supporting and raising awareness of this history for the years to come,\u201d said Elly Peng, Student Body President at Earl Haig.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is so incredible to see the initiative and commitment that students have taken to raise awareness about Canada\u2019s history and how it has negatively impacted generations of Indigenous Peoples. Seeing so many young people take the time to reflect on the atrocities Indigenous Peoples went through helps everyone get a better understanding of what happened and what is needed to support Reconciliation in Canada,\u201d said Teresa Edwards, Executive Director and In-House Legal Counsel at the LHF.<\/p>\n

The LHF is a national, Indigenous-led, charitable organization that has been working to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada for over 22 years. The LHF\u2019s goal is to educate Canadians about the impacts on 7 generations of Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis) children, their families and communities from attending Residential and\/or Day School. By developing and addressing stereotypes, LHF gives Canadians the tools to address discrimination and the ability to build respectful relationships, which contributes to the equity and dignity of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.<\/p>\n

The LHF has more than 30 educational exhibitions that promote awareness of Indigenous history that are free to borrow and is working on making exhibitions available online. LHF also has curricula for K-12 and for adults, along with Activity Guides, Workshops and Training, and Podcasts all aimed at educating Canadians about the shared history of Residential and Day Schools, the Sixties Scoop, etc. In order to offer solutions on how to be an ally. The LHF works to develop empathy and understanding so as to eliminate racism against Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n<\/div>
