(Ottawa, ON) November 10, 2021 \u2013<\/strong> On this week\u2019s Roots & Hoots<\/em> l'\u00e9pisode, l'animateur Gordon Spence, est heureux d'\u00eatre accompagn\u00e9 du chasseur inuit et a\u00een\u00e9 Larry Audlaluk. Larry vit une vie semi-retrait\u00e9e avec sa femme \u00e0 Grise Fiord, la communaut\u00e9 la plus au nord du Canada. Il est un grand-p\u00e8re et un arri\u00e8re-grand-p\u00e8re d\u00e9vou\u00e9. Larry est le r\u00e9cipiendaire de l'Ordre du Canada et a \u00e9galement r\u00e9cemment \u00e9crit un livre intitul\u00e9 : Ce que je sais : la vie d'un exil\u00e9 dans l'Extr\u00eame-Arctique<\/em> which is a Governor General\u2019s Literary Award Finalist. Larry and Gordon talk about survival in the Canadian Arctic, and the lessons learned along the way.<\/p>\n

Larry Audlaluk\u2019s family were a part of the High Arctic Relocation Program that took place during the Cold War in the 1950\u2019s. The insensitivity of the bureaucracy at the time, was such that many families\u2019 lives were forever altered. Larry was about 3 years old when his family was relocated from Northern Quebec, and he is today the longest-living resident of Grise Fiord. What he remembers most from that time, is the face of trauma from his parents. The darkness of the winter and the death of his father in the spring following their arrival, spoke to the true desolation of the lands. Larry says arriving up north, felt like landing on the moon. People were hungry and struggled to find water in the first couple years. Larry speaks about the relationship with the RCMP, who are said to have referred to the relocation, as a Rehabilitation Program internally. Larry details his experiences with such vividness.<\/p>\n

The LHF has been in operation for more than 21 years as a national, Indigenous-led, charitable organization that has been working to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada. The LHF\u2019s goal is to educate and raise awareness about the history and existing intergenerational impacts of the Residential School System, Sixties Scoop, Day Schools and other colonial acts of oppression on Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis) Peoples.<\/p>\n

The exhibition examines the experience of Survivors of the Residential School System and raises awareness on the impacts it has on our communities. La LHF propose \u00e9galement un programme de la maternelle \u00e0 la 12e ann\u00e9e et pour les adultes, ainsi que des guides d'activit\u00e9s, des ateliers et des formations, et des balados, tous visant \u00e0 \u00e9duquer les Canadiens sur l'histoire autochtone et l'histoire commune des pensionnats indiens, la rafle des ann\u00e9es 60, les femmes autochtones disparues et assassin\u00e9es et \u00c9coles de filles et de jour.
