Je m'appelle Teresa Edwards, jeune femme de feu, directrice ex\u00e9cutive et conseill\u00e8re juridique interne de la Fondation Legacy of Hope. Aujourd'hui, nous sommes tous solidaires pour observer et honorer la Journ\u00e9e du chandail orange, \u00e9galement d\u00e9sormais reconnue comme jour f\u00e9ri\u00e9 sous le nom de Journ\u00e9e nationale pour la v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et la r\u00e9conciliation.<\/p>\n

Le concept de la Journ\u00e9e de la chemise orange vient de Phyllis Jack Webstad, dont la propre histoire de s'\u00eatre fait arracher sa nouvelle chemise orange bien-aim\u00e9e lors de son premier jour de pensionnat a inspir\u00e9 des gens de partout au Canada \u00e0 porter des chemises orange aujourd'hui pour honorer son histoire et les nombreux autres qui ont fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 ces \u00e9coles.<\/p>\n

Orange Shirt Day was created as a way for all Canadians to acknowledge the continuing devastation and heartbreak caused by the Residential School System, which robbed 150,000 children \u2013 7 generations of First Nations, M\u00e9tis and Inuit children from their families and forced them into inadequate and abusive Church-run schools whose intent was to destroy all that was Indigenous. In these schools, the children were often treated horribly and made to feel ashamed for being themselves. Many even died at the hands of priests, nuns, administrators and teachers. The unearthing of these children and the exposed mistreatment continues to be confirmed all across Canada surrounding many of these schools.<\/p>\n

En ce jour, nous devons prendre le temps de nous souvenir des enfants qui ne sont jamais revenus \u00e0 la maison, de leurs familles, ainsi que des Survivants et Survivants interg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnels des pensionnats qui continuent de ressentir les impacts de leur s\u00e9jour l\u00e0-bas.<\/p>\n

When we think about Truth and Reconciliation \u2013 it is an important day. It is a day meant for all Canadians to reflect upon and inform themselves about Indigenous history and Canada\u2019s history of Residential Schools, their impacts, and the implications these schools and the associated policies and laws which went on to build the entire nation of Canada.<\/p>\n

Si nous voulons vraiment comprendre notre pays, nous devons chercher \u00e0 comprendre toute son histoire, y compris les parties, comme les pensionnats, qui sont tragiques et honteuses. S'informer sur ce que le gouvernement, les enseignants, les administrateurs, les religieuses et les pr\u00eatres ont fait aux enfants autochtones dans les pensionnats signifie \u00e9galement essayer de comprendre les perspectives des survivants, des survivants interg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnels et de leurs communaut\u00e9s. En cette Journ\u00e9e nationale de v\u00e9rit\u00e9 et r\u00e9conciliation, prenez le temps de vous engager dans un acte de r\u00e9conciliation, aussi mineur ou majeur soit-il. Que vous preniez un moment pour \u00e9couter les histoires des survivants des pensionnats, que vous fassiez un don \u00e0 un organisme de bienfaisance autochtone ou que vous portiez simplement quelque chose d'orange, assurez-vous que votre acte de r\u00e9conciliation est significatif pour vous et que vous faites quelque chose aujourd'hui et, esp\u00e9rons-le, continuez \u00e0 prendre \u00e9tapes pour \u00eatre un alli\u00e9.<\/p>\n

While Orange Shirt Day is still an important day to contemplate the impacts of Residential Schools and other colonial policies of oppression, and to help ensure that Survivors, their families and their communities feel seen and heard, it is important to remember that ultimately, Orange Shirt Day is just one day. Residential Schools were not built in a day. Neither were the policies that established them. The hurt of Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors won\u2019t be healed in a day. Nor will one day be enough to undo all of the inequities that Indigenous Peoples are currently subjected to within Canada. Therefore, meaningful Reconciliation will take meaningful action and much more than one day.<\/p>\n

Aujourd'hui, et chaque jour apr\u00e8s, tous les Canadiens doivent se rappeler que la vraie r\u00e9conciliation ne peut pas reposer sur les \u00e9paules des actions d'un seul jour, ou reposer sur les \u00e9paules des efforts des peuples autochtones. La vraie r\u00e9conciliation signifie que chaque Canadien, chaque jour, doit se consacrer \u00e0 \u00e9tablir des relations positives avec les peuples autochtones et \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un Canada qui sert les int\u00e9r\u00eats de tous ses citoyens.<\/p>\n

C'est le sens de V\u00e9rit\u00e9 et R\u00e9conciliation. Souvenir, Honorer, Gu\u00e9rir et Agir pour la R\u00e9conciliation pour aujourd'hui, et pour chaque demain apr\u00e8s cela.<\/p>\n

The LHF is celebrated their 21-year anniversary as a national, Indigenous-led, charitable organization that has been working to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada. The LHF\u2019s goal is to educate and raise awareness about the history and existing intergenerational impacts of the Residential and Day School System, Sixties Scoop, and other colonial acts of oppression on Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and M\u00e9tis) Peoples. The LHF has 25 exhibitions that are available for loan for free and we are working on making some exhibitions available online.<\/p>\n
