Not only has Dr. Cook long-served her community but she was the first ever Cree woman to graduate from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine as a Doctor. We are proud that Marlyn has served on the Legacy of Hope Foundation\u2019s Board of Directors since 2005 and continues to be an active Member.<\/p>\n<p>Originaire de la Nation crie de Misipawistik, au Manitoba, Marlyn a commenc\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re dans le domaine de la sant\u00e9 en tant qu&#039;infirmi\u00e8re. Apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moin du racisme subi par les peuples autochtones dans le syst\u00e8me de sant\u00e9, Marlyn a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de devenir m\u00e9decin afin de pouvoir d\u00e9fendre les peuples autochtones de l&#039;int\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Dr. Cook\u2019s began to include Indigenous ceremony which she incorporated into her Western practice in order to re-instill a sense of pride, identity, and self-esteem. Dr. Cook has now returned to her hometown as a family physician in the Ongomiizwin Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing within the University of Manitoba\u2019s Faculty of Health Sciences and she continues to look for ways to incorporate traditional healing into Manitoba\u2019s healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the Legacy of Hope Foundation, we strive to tell Canada\u2019s true history and the negative impacts that the Residential School System continues to have on Indigenous Peoples. It is from this understanding that we applaud the work of Dr. Marlyn Cook and her ground-breaking decision to integrate Indigenous ceremony into her practice and for her tireless efforts in advocating to eradicate racism from Canada\u2019s healthcare system,\u201d said Teresa Edwards, Executive Director and In-House Legal Counsel for the organization.
