The Legacy of Hope Foundation Acknowledges Indigenous Screen Office Funding for Upcoming Podcast Series
(Ottawa, ON) – January 29, 2025 – The Legacy of Hope Foundation is pleased to be the recipient of the Indigenous Screen Office – Podcasting Program funding to support our 1-year podcast project Roots and Hoots Presents: Breaking the Silence – Canada’s Classrooms of Injustice.
This special series, under the umbrella of the Roots and Hoots Podcast will produce several episodes on the subject of the Federal Indian Day School System in Canada. Indigenous scholars, historians, Survivors and Elders from across the country will be invited to shed light on this oppressive system. Roots and Hoots Presents: Breaking the Silence – Canada’s Classrooms of Injustice will help preserve and protect the reclamation of Indigenous histories and support the ongoing healing of Survivors and intergenerational Survivors through storytelling and education.
The Federal Indian Day School System is a lesser known topic amongst everyday Canadians who may be more familiar with the Residential School System. Over 200,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children attended federally-operated institutions called “Indian Day Schools”, with more than 699 Indian Day Schools established and operated by the Federal Government beginning in 1920.
In light of the recent Federal Indian Day School Class Action and Settlement Agreement, the Legacy of Hope Foundation (LHF), seeks to educate Canadians on the history of Day Schools and its impacts.
The LHF has 30 educational exhibitions that promote awareness of Indigenous history that are free to borrow and is working on making exhibitions available online. LHF also has curriculums for K-12 and for adults, along with Activity Guides, Workshops, and Training, two Podcast series, all aimed at educating Canadians about Indigenous history and the shared history of Residential and Day Schools, the Child Welfare System, and other colonial acts of oppression. The LHF works to develop empathy and understanding to eliminate ongoing racism against Indigenous Peoples and to foster Reconciliation in Canada.
